Final Analysis

 3.01
Chris Rito | Mike Nazarek
RB Michael Turner
QB: RB: Tomlinson James Turner WR: TE: PK:

Yes, we know that he has the same bye week as Edge...but as a nice complement to the "safe" pick of James at 2.12 we wanted to select an explosive player as a RB#3 here. There are some unknowns with Turner going to a new team, but he finally gets to strut his stuff as a feature back after being the NFL's top backup for years. Sure, he will have some clunker games... but he is also likely to have some huge games where he rips off long runs for scores. In a "best-ball" format, he makes a great RB#3.  FWIW, we would have taken one of Moss/Wayne/Owens/Brady/Manning had they fallen to us instead of one of these RBs.

3.02
Ian Allan (via trade)
WR Andre Johnson

QB: RB: SJackson  WR: AJohnson TE: PK:

I’ve been doing lots of trading. I’ve traded away six draft picks, and here at 3.02, I’m finally selecting my first player. But it’s worked out fine. Had I stayed at pick 2.05, my selection would have been Reggie Wayne. Here, trading down almost a round, I’m getting a wide receiver that I view as almost identical to Wayne — and my late 7th-round pick is now an early 5th-round choice. I see Johnson has a safe choice to catch 90-plus balls, and he’ll probably score 8-9-10 TDs as well.

3.03

Jerome Hickerson
WR Braylon Edwards

QB: RB: Addai Maroney  WR: Edwards TE: PK:

I considered Steve Smith here but chose Edwards because I prefer the Cleveland QB situation. At this point of the draft there were many fine receivers available but I wasn’t able to trade downward and didn’t want to wait too long to grab my first receiver.

3.04

John Georgopoulos
WR Marques Colston

QB: RB: Westbrook WR: Wayne Colston TE:  PK:
With RB James gone, I had no reason to take a RB in this spot. I decided to grab Colston, my #2 WR at this time. Pairing him with Wayne gives me a dependable and explosive pair of WRs.

3.05
Jim Butler
TE Antonio Gates

QB: RB: McGahee White  WR: TE: Gates  PK:

In a format that requires starting a TE, I have always felt that it is beneficial to get one of the premiere TEs in the league. Given Gate’s level of consistent performance, the drop off between the available WR or QBs at this position compared to the drop off waiting until round 4 to take my TE is enough to warrant snagging the top TE in the league.

3.06

Shannon O'Leary
WR Larry Fitzgerald

QB: RB: Gore  Lewis WR: Fitzgerald TE: PK:
Larry Fitzgerald has become on of the NFL elite receivers. At six foot three inches, he is a big target which translated into 10 touchdowns last year. He also had 1400 yards receiving. Boldin a premier receiver as well, but the Cardinals find a way to keep both happy with plenty of balls thrown to each receiver. If the running game improves I could see Fitzgerald’s Touchdowns going up.  He should be close to 100 catches and over a thousand yards again this year.

3.07

Chris Dolfi | Tom Walls
WR TJ Houshmandzadeh

QB: RB: Lynch Jones-Drew WR: Housh TE: PK:

There are a couple questions for T J – no wait – just one: Will Chad Johnson be starting opposite him in Cincy, or not? If not, will T J excel , or flounder due to increased focus from the opposing defense? We think Houshmandzadeh will do well if he is the #1 or not, but better if Johnson is there.

Houshmandzadeh was tied with Wes Welker for the league lead in receptions. Palmer trusts him, and that is the most important charactersitc a WR can have. We’re very happy to have him as our #1 WR.

3.08

Ian Allan (via trade)
 WR Steve Smith

QB: RB: SJackson  WR: AJohnson SSmith TE: PK:
Smith underperformed last year, but it wasn’t his fault. Once Jake Delhomme got hurt, the Panthers were left with David Carr and Vinny Testaverde at quarterback, and that was all she wrote. In the three games with Delhomme, Smith caught 16 passes for 282 yards and 4 TDs. He’s going to be just fine this year — about as good as any wide receiver, I figure.

3.09

Duane Cahill
WR Anquan Boldin

QB: Brady RB: LJohnson WR: Boldin TE: PK:
In past FADs, I come into the draft with a set strategy and re-tool as circumstances require throughout the draft.  This year, I've decided to go with the old reliable "best athlete available" theory in the early rounds without regard to making my roster look a certain way.  That couldn't be more obvious (to me, anyway) at this point, as I don't believe my strategy ever included getting one guy at each of the three skill positions in the first three rounds.

The difference this year though seems to be in the running backs.  While 20 have been selected already, the last several selections seem to validate that there is another cluster coming up soon and I'll be able to grab one in the 4th.

Boldin is the eighth WR on my draft board, and I'm getting him as the ninth receiver taken.  In reviewing my draft thus far, I have to give myself a "B+" grade.  I haven't made the bonehead pick that's going to cost me a shot at winning FAD, but then again, I haven't made the "I can't believe this guy was here" pick yet either.

3.10

Greg Kellogg
QB Tony Romo

QB: Romo RB: Portis RBrown  WR: TE: PK:
With two RBs in the stable I had the option of going for a third back, a quarterback or a top WR.  It is never a good idea to chase a run and there was certainly a run in receivers leading up to my pick.  With a consensus top four QB available, I couldn't see passing on him to grab a decent WR1.

3.11

Matt Pitzer
WR Chad Johnson

QB: RB: Barber Bush  WR CJohnson TE: PK:
OK, I'll be the sucker to take a chance on Chad Johnson. Who knows what will happen with he and the Bengals before the start of the season, but he clearly can be a dominant receiver. And while he has been a little inconsistent during each of the past couple of years, his totals are great for a guy at the end of the third round, especially his catches in a point-per-reception league.
===================================================================================

3.12

Tony Holm
RB Willie Parker

QB: RB: Grant Parker WR: RMoss TE: PK:
The Steelers missed a Jerome Bettis type back last year and that clearly showed.  Willie Parker is fast, elusive and one of the big home run hitters in this draft and not having to decide when to start him, I'll be collecting all his home run balls.  The Steelers added rookie Rashard Mendenhall to be the pounder, Willie Parker is still the starting RB and the guy you want.  Parker was the leading rusher in the NFL before breaking his leg, so there's a lot of talent here and I expect a big year out of Parker.
