Final Analysis

 7.01
Chris Rito | Mike Nazarek
WR Derrick Mason
QB: McNabb RB: Tomlinson James Turner WR: RWilliams Mason TE: Witten PK:

There were a few RBs that we really liked (Taylor, Stewart) but we decided that we had to tap the vast pool of solid and safe WR#2s with this pick since we had waited so long for a WR#1. There were many, many good candidates for this pick but we turned to an old favorite.

Its hard not to like a reception machine like Mason in a PPR league - his 103 catches were good for 4th in the NFL, as were his amazing 164 targets in 2007. The comforting fact is that his targets were consistently high regardless of the QB and the health of the other WRs in the lineup. The opening up of the Baltimore offense with Cam Cameron should only help their most dependable receiver maintain his pace in 2008. He never topped 100 yards in 2007, yet still amasses 1100 receiving yards. Like RB James taken earlier, Mason is a safe and solid pick as a base for our crew.

7.02
TC Cannon
RB Jonathan Stewart (R)

QB: PManning RB: Peterson Stewart  WR: Owens Burress Chambers TE: PK:

Stewart was a talented and entertaining NCAA star. The Panthers should give him many opportunities to become a NFL do-it-all RB under a gameplan that prefers solid rushing over iffy passing. Two blue chip backs can take a lot of pressure off a young quarterback.  We *hope* he does well enough to be a steady FAD starter in support of Peterson, but the team's success does not depend on it.

7.03

Jerome Hickerson
RB Fred Taylor

QB: Palmer RB: Addai Maroney  Taylor WR: Edwards Harrison Gonzales TE: PK:

Well, my first choice at this spot was Jonathan Stewart, but he was snatched at 7.02. Taylor has certainly seen better days and won’t be the primary option for the Jags, but he is still an important part of the running duo for Jacksonville and should be able to muster a half dozen scores and possibly a thousand yards between his almost certain injuries.

7.04

John Georgopoulos
QB Eli Manning

QB: EManning  RB: Westbrook TJones DWilliams WR: Wayne Colston Ward TE:  PK:
Well, there goes my plan to get the Carolina backfield, thanks to TC's c-blocking. Time to switch gears and grab a QB... and believe me, that goes against every fiber of my being. I usually never grab a QB this early.

7.05
Jim Butler
WR Joey Galloway

QB: Brees Schaub  RB: McGahee White  WR: Galloway TE: Gates Cooley  PK

I was happy to see that in round 7 I could pick up a #1 WR that didn't perform too badly last year. He had some really good string of games towards the end of the season and I hope that continues on this year. Hopefully the QB situation is settled in Tampa and that will equate to a good season from Galloway.

7.06

Shannon O'Leary
QB Marc Bulger

QB: Bulger RB: Gore Lewis RJohnson WR: Fitzgerald White TE: Gonzalez  PK:

The Rams do not lack talent. RB Jackson should rebound this year, and if Bulger can stay healthy I may have a solid QB. WR Holt probably has lost a step but still is a top 10 receiver and someone has to throw the ball to him. I am once again gambling the Bulger can put together a solid season. It’s amazing how optimistic a person can be in May. I will need to grab another QB soon, as I don’t want to rely to heavily on Bulger. He does have the potential to be a second tier QB and at this point in the draft I am only seeing third tier QBs on my draft board.

7.07

Matt Pitzer (via trade)
WR Kevin Curtis

QB: Hasselbeck Roethlisberger  RB: Barber Bush WR CJohnson Holt Curtis TE: PK:
Even with all of the Eagles' problems last year, Curtis finished with 77 catches, 1,110 yards and six TDs. Given a more even performance, his numbers might be even a little better as he is the closest thing the team has to a No. 1 receiver. I expect him to catch plenty of balls again, helping him fit in nicely as my third receiver.

7.08

TC Cannon (via trade)
TE Dallas Clark

QB: PManning RB: Peterson Stewart  WR: Owens Burress Chambers TE: Clark  PK:
RB3, WR4 or TE1 for me? I am very happy to add TE Clark. - You may remember him as the impressive Colt TE that doubled his scoring in 2007 with TE high 11 TDs scored. Or you can remember him as a TE wearing that silly #44. Or you may think of him as a Manning target that to advantage of excellent opportunities last year. Either way, it's another fun-to-follow player on this roster.

10+ scores again seems an unreasonable expectation. However, we'd be happy with a more traditional 50/500/6 season from TE Clark.

7.09

Duane Cahill
RB
Rashard Mendenhall
QB: Brady RB: LJohnson Graham Mendenhall  WR: Boldin Bowe Jennings TE: PK
OK, so I'm not the sharpest crayon in the barn (to mix metaphors), but if the Steelers plan is to split reps between Willie Parker and Mendenhall, then why can I get Mendenhall four rounds later?  I'm not saying, I'm just saying...

Apologies to Mr. Holm for stealing his handcuff here, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Mendenhall out-point Parker this year.  That's not where the smart money is, but given Parker's injury history and his propensity for getting hit when he tries to go inside, I think that Rashard is tremendous value here.  Look for him to get 40% of the touches, and most of the goalline work. ===================================================================================

7.10

Greg Kellogg
WR Donald Driver

QB: Romo RB: Portis RBrown Henry  WR: Marshal Evans Driver TE: PK:
In past FADs I have made the mistake of not concentrating enough on WRs.  This year I want to ensure I have at least three number ones for their teams and hopefully four.  Driver fits the role of my third starter nicely.  He is in a good system that he knows well but his value is down due to uncertainty at the quarterback position.  Should Aaron Rodgers prove up to the task, this will look like a steal at the end of the year.  As a WR3 in this format, I just need 4-6 large games with another 4-6 in the six receptions for 60 yards range.  Last year Driver gave three large games (20+ points) and six of the mid-range games (12+ points).  So I need a bump up in TDs (he had just two last season) to reach this goal but still, getting the 23rd ranked WR from a year ago as my #3 starter has to be a good thing.  Doesn't it?

7.11

Ian Allan (via trade)
QB Jay Cutler

QB: Cutler RB: SJackson Forte KSmith WR: AJohnson SSmith Welker CJohnson TE: PK:
Cutler is the last quarterback on the board that I really like. After a rough start for the first month of last year, he played very well for the final 10 weeks. I think he’s going to average 230-240 total yards per game and throw 25 TDs.  I don’t consider the diabetes thing to be significant. Wade Wilson played with diabetes in the late ‘80s; even quarterbacked a few games for my teams, I think. And looking at the draft board, I see Tony Holm is up next with a pair of picks and doesn’t yet have a quarterback. So I’m figuring there’s probably about a 70 percent chance he’ll take Cutler if I don’t make a trade. Pitzer made a trade a round or two back, so I know he’ll at least listen to fair offers. We were able to make a deal. I pick up 6 spots of draft position here; he moves up 14 spots in round 10.

7.12

Tony Holm
WR Jerricho
Cotchery
QB: RB: Grant Parker McFadden JJones  WR: RMoss Holmes Cotchery TE: PK:
Cotchery had a tremendous season last year catching 82 balls for 1,130 yards and was the clear cut #1 for the Jets.  The knock is that he only caught 2 TDs but opportunity was certainly there and I have to imagine the only place to go is up for Cotchery and his TD total in 2008.  To my eye, just like last year, WRs drop off into the abyss fairly quickly and there won't be enough of the good ones to go around in a draft like the FAD.  I like to generate my points from the RB and WR positions in the FAD so I'm getting while the getting is still good.
