Final Analysis

 13.01
Chris Rito | Mike Nazarek
DT Patriots
QB: McNabb Kitna RB: Tomlinson James Turner CTaylor
WR: RWilliams Mason Burleson Gaffney
TE: Witten Smith PK: DT: Patriots

The run on defenses will now commence, and we see a clear dropoff after 4-6 teams so we take our #1A defense here. The improved Vikings (and the Chargers - darn you TC!) were a very strong candidate here, but 2008 schedule differences gave the nod to NE. The Vikes were a little too dependent on scoring TDs for their fantasy points and were also streakier in 2007, finishing with less than 7 FAD points in half of their games and under 3 many times. On the other hand, the Patriots had a comfy 11 games with 7 or more points, nine of them in double digits. They were a solid #2 in the NFL in sacks - a stat that tends to repeat more often than does defensive TD scoring.

Having a top 4, consistently-scoring defense gives us the freedom to perhaps use our last selection on a 6th RB or 6th-7th WR instead of needing to carry a second defense in order to guarantee good scoring from this position. We also can make a solid case for having drafted the top player at three different positions (RB, TE and D) thus far

13.02
TC Cannon
QB Jeff Garcia

QB: Manning Garcia RB: Peterson Stewart Benson Young

WR: Owens Burress Chambers Engram Hardy TE: Clark  PK:  DT: Chargers

No fancy selection here. After waiting as long as possible to add a QB2,  Garcia was an easy now-or-never choice. He is  a repeat Pro Bowler that has recently bounced from SF to CLE to DET to PHI to TB in a five year period. If he can resist meeting a new realtor, Garcia should continue as the Bucs starter. Only Bears, Raiders, and even lesser choices remain undrafted. This worked out very well.

(Now.. if I remember to do it..  the Colts' Jim Sorgi may be the last round QB pick that finalizes my roster.)

13.03

Jerome Hickerson
WR Sidney Rice

QB: Palmer Campbell  RB: Addai Maroney  Taylor CJohnson Rice
WR: Edwards Harrison Gonzales RBrown Rice TE: Shockey PK:  DT:

I wanted Bernard Berrian earlier in the draft but I missed out so I moved down a bit on my list and selected another Vikings receiver. I see good potential in Rice as I expect him to be the primary redzone receiver. Selected 62 picks later than Berrian, Rice is likely to be the better value and may even exceed Berrian’s numbers.

13.04

John Georgopoulos
RB Carnell Williams

QB: EManning Edwards  RB: Westbrook TJones DWilliams Betts CWilliams
WR: Wayne Colston Ward Branch DJackson TE: PK:  DT:
Williams was at one time a very important Buc. What can I say, I am big, sentimental jerk. Kids, don't try this at home!

13.05
Duane Cahill (via trade)
QB JaMarcus Russell

QB: Brady Russell RB: LJohnson Graham Mendenhall McAllister CBrown RWilliams
WR: Boldin Bowe Jennings Bruce Stallworth
TE: PK:  DT:
I can’t believe I just traded up to get JaMarcus Russell.

Selecting Tom Brady early allowed me to stock up at the RB/WR positions while other owners were drafting their second quarterbacks (and tight ends).  As long as Brady stays healthy, the weeks that I use my second QB will be few and far between.   However, I still want to make sure that I’m going to have someone that I can rely on as a week-in, week-out starter.  Choosing Ricky Williams in the last round cost me a shot at Jeff Garcia (although Rito informed me that he’d have taken Ricky with his next pick).  Russell is last QB left that I can count on to start.  The Dolfi/Walls team may very well have had their sites set on him, as only Derek Anderson graces their roster at the position.

Russell will start. That’s more than I can say for what is left – Pennington/Clemens, Grossman/Orton, Croyle/Huard, Beck/McCown, Boller/Flacco or Ryan/Redman.  I’ll take my chances with Russell.

13.06

Shannon O'Leary
DT Bears

QB: Bulger Delhomme RB: Gore Lewis RJohnson Bell Foster
WR: Fitzgerald White Walker Porter
TE: Gonzalez  PK:  DT: Bears
Year after year the bears field an above average defense. This year should be no different.  When selecting a defense it can be a crap shoot, but I like to get defenses such as Chicago as they are usually in the top 5 each year. Last year they were the number 3 fantasy defense in this scoring system. Also I like drafting my homie, Urlacher. The Bears have experience a few injuries in the defense the last couple of years, but still continue to perform as a top caliber defense.  You have to like that.

13.07

Chris Dolfi | Tom Walls
RB Michael Bush

QB: Anderson  RB: Lynch Jones-Drew Jacobs MBush
WR: Housh Coles Clayton SMoss Hackett
TE: Winslow Heap  PK: DT:
This is a classic high risk/reward pick. The Raiders took McFadden in the first round this year, and we expect him to be the feature back. We also think that Bush will push Justin Fargas for carries. He's too talented to sit on the bench. Of course there are many questions about Bush's injury, but he should be back.

We figure somewhere between 5-10 touches for Bush, with about 800 yards total. But if McFadden or Fargas get injured; Bush's workload will increase accordingly.

13.08

Ian Allan
TE Heath Miller

QB: Cutler Garrard  RB: SJackson Forte KSmith Bradshaw
WR: AJohnson SSmith Welker CJohnson BrJohnson
TE: Davis Miller PK:  DT:
Holm and Kellogg are coming up in the next few picks. They’ll both pick twice before I get to choose again. So I’m confident that each will select a tight end, and I think there’s even a chance they might select four tight ends with those four picks. So I figured I’d better grab Miller. I’m not completely sold on the other guy I have at this position (Vernon Davis) so Miller gives me some depth in case Davis doesn’t work out. Plus, if these guys each score 5 TDs, maybe they’ll come on different weeks and I’ll get 10 TDs out of the position.

13.09

Jim Butler (via trade)
RB Correll Buckhalter

QB: Brees Schaub Rivers  RB: McGahee White Duckett Buckhalter
WR: Galloway Sweed DJackson Glenn
TE: Gates Cooley  PK: DT:
Buckhalter is a consistent staple in the Eagles offense. Though sitting behind Westbrook on the depth chart hasn't hurt his opportunities. At this point in the draft, I was looking for a guy that was a solid #2 on his team. He could carry the load in Philly should Westbrook get hurt, not like that hasn't happened before, and if that's the case, Correll could end up being a top performer.

13.10

Greg Kellogg
TE Tony Scheffler

QB: Romo Leinart ASmith  RB: Portis RBrown Henry FJones Norwood
WR:
Marshal Evans Driver DCarter TE: Scheffler PK:  DT:
After you get past the elite tight ends everyone is a 400-600 yard 3-5 TD guy.  Scheffler started just seven games last year but still managed to hit the top end of those numbers.  He had dramatic improvement from his rookie season and should show some growth in 2008.

13.11

Chris Dolfi | Tom Walls (via trade)
DT Giants

QB: Anderson  RB: Lynch Jones-Drew Jacobs MBush
WR: Housh Coles Hackett
TE: Winslow Heap  PK: DT: Giants
We were hoping the Chargers might fall to us with the earlier of our 13th round picks, but we weren't so lucky.  It gave us the opportunity to put off our defense selection until this spot, and bolster our thin RB corps with our earlier of the two picks.  But don't let that fool you, we're happy with our defensive choice.

The New York Giants don't have a particularly explosive special teams, even if they averaged the 7th best kickoff returns in the NFL last year.  They also didn't do a particularly good job of keeping opponents off the scoreboard, ranking only 17th in that category.  What the Giants *DO* have is (in our opinion) the best pass rushing defensive line in the NFL - a fact borne out by their league best 53 sacks in 2007.  And the Giants D closed strong in the playoffs last year, stopping some of the NFL's best offensive squads (Dallas, Green Bay, and New England) in their final three games.  In 2008, we'll take the Giants improved defensive play, and their continued sack dominance, and watch our top-5 defense score points for us every week.

13.12

Tony Holm
WR Vincent Jackson

QB: Young  Rodgers Jackson  RB: Grant Parker McFadden JJones Fargas

WR: RMoss Holmes Cotchery Berrian VJackson TE: PK:  DT:
It seems like Jackson has been sliding down the board and I had settled on Jackson with one of my next two picks if he was still here.  While there is competition, Jackson is the incumbent and really turned it on in the playoffs last year.  Jackson was everyone's Cinderella pick last season as he was a 3rd year WR, with all the skills and size, in an offensive juggernaut of a system that didn't have Chris Chambers at the time.  Opportunity still knocks for Vincent Jackson and he very well could be a 4th year bust out.  He showed the Chargers toward the end of last year that he was certainly capable of being a go-to guy and I hope that it carries over into 2008.
