Again,
this early drafting forces me to do things I ordinarily would
never do... like draft a defense before the next-to-last round.
But given the depth of this Draft and the pattern of selections,
drafting the Sports Grumblings' #4 projected defense in this
slot isn't bad.

Silly
me. For 20 seasons, I have supported the unpopular notion that FF
kickers can be important to a team's success. After seeing game
after game each NFL week where those golden field goals are
difference makers, I feel that the same is true in our hobby,
too. Often we win or lose by a margin of a few points.
Booting a pair of 3-pointers more than your opponent is
often the difference in FF contest. The trick, of course,
is selecting the best prospects and having them produce
afterwards.
Having the productive Patriot and Cowboy kickers on roster seems
a big benefit that could lead to a FAD championship. Perhaps I
can gamble on longshots being on my bench in the next round. In the meantime, it's kicker heaven in Cannonville -
at least in late May. =================================================================================== |

I
quickly grabbed my second defense. In the FAD format, I like to
have two good defenses as it appears to me that this gives me a
lift of several points per week each week. With the Vikings and
Cowboys, I feel I have two top tier defenses at the relatively
minor expense of 14th and 15th round picks. The addition of DE
Allen should significantly improve the Vikings defensive stats
this season.

We
thought about both Morris and Walter two rounds prior, and were
pleased they were still there when we selected in 14-15. When we
made the trade up to get Morris, we rationalized that Walter
would more likely fall a few more slots than would Morris, and
it worked as planned. So why Walter? Just like Morris, he is in
a great position to get a lot of action while flying under the
radar, and plays with a #1 guy on his team with a history
of injury. He put up very nice numbers when Andre Johnson was
out last year, and kept going when he returned to the lineup.
Schaub and the Texans O should continue to improve and Walter
will reap the benefits.

The
Bengal offense showed some issues inside the red zone last
season and that could carry over in to this season. This means
Shayne should get plenty of opportunities. Should the 2006
Bengals show up and start scoring insane amounts of points,
Graham could benefit there as well.

Crosby
came in as a rookie and led the fantasy kickers. Gone is Favre,
which may mean more field goal attempts.
Crosby
was perfect inside 50 yards as a rookie and only missed 2 beyond
that mark. Kickers are up and down year to year, so the fact
that he was number one was not the reason I drafted him. I think
Rogers
will progress this year, and the running game is finally looking
good once again.

We
had to get Quinn. He is more valuable to us than any other team,
for another team - Quinn here is a reach.
We think Derek Anderson will be the starter all year for the
Browns and have a very good year, but feel much better having
Quinn on the roster too. Anderson has added pressure other top
flight QBs don't have with a first round draft pick media
darling sitting right behind him.
Anderson got an extension, and has the trust of the Browns
management; we'll sleep a little better knowing we have QB2
Quinn too.

I’m shocked that Olsen is still
sitting here. There are only 17 good tight ends in this draft,
and he’s one of them. With the Bears being weak at wide
receiver, I expect him to lead that team in receiving. I thought
he would have been picked about three rounds ago. I can’t
believe that the guys with only one tight end passed on him in
each of the last two rounds — Cannon, Georgopoulos, Holm,
Hickerson and O’Leary. And Duane Cahill (one of the feared
owners in this league) is next up, and he doesn’t even have a
tight end. So while it wasn’t my intention to draft three
tight ends, I will play the gatekeeper role and select him. With
the best-ball format, I expect my troika of Olsen, Vernon Davis
and Heath Miller to maybe give me the best production in the
league at this position. If two of them happen to have big weeks
at the same time, I’ll roll one over into the flex position.
Or maybe I’ll wind up trading one of them. We’ll see what
happens. I drafted three tight ends last year and it worked out
fine — one of them got hurt, and I still got solid production
at the position (and won the league).

This
offseason, the Jags signed Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson,
essentially overhauling their entire receiving corps. As I
chronicled Reggie’s fall throughout this draft, one number
kept staring me in the face – 10. Williams caught 10 TD
passes last season, including seven in his final nine games.
Even if he doesn’t win a starting position on this team,
you have to like a 6-4 red zone target that David Garrard is
obviously comfortable throwing to. As a WR 6, you have to
like him even more.

Meacham
lost his entire rookie season to injury so where he fits on the
Saint's depth chart is in question. Clearly Devery
Henderson will battle for the spot, but his inconsistency leads
me to think that Meacham will start the season as the third WR
with a good shot at supplanting David Patten before the year is
done. As a first round pick, much will be expected of him.
As a fifth WR for my team - just a couple big games.

I
like the fact that I'm getting a WR1 this late in the draft.
Gage is the top receiver in Tennessee coming off the best season
of his career and while I don't expect Randy Moss type numbers
the opportunity will be there for him. In 2007 Gage had 55
catches for 750 yards but only found pay dirt twice. With
Gage and Young working together this off season, I expect
Young's comfort level to rise with Gage giving him more end
zone looks while piling up decent yardage.
