When
we drafted the Patriots DT back in the 13th round, we stated
that we would have the freedom to eschew a 2nd DT if we
chose. We also need a backup PK in this draft.
However, the value of the Bucs in the 19th round was too good to
pass up. Quietly, they were a top 12 defense last year despite
retooling on the fly with a very young core of players. Games
against the NFC North and AFC West this year look like good
chances for sacks and turnovers, as well as their own weak NFC
South. While this pick will cost us a flier at RB or WR in round
20, we also know that this pair will give us great
production from our fantasy defense every week in 2008.

With
his concussion and shoulder pains gone, the former Colt
could be a very big FF surprise this season. Instead of sharing
the TE targets with Dallas Clark, he will be a solid endzone target for Carson Palmer to consider. If you fail to
invest in a reasonable NFL starter for your roster, consider the low-cost
Ben Utecht. 40-500-6 numbers are my high-end expectations.

An
unexciting pick but he has looked good during the off season and
he has a decent chance to be the starter. My other consideration
was to grab the backup for either Carson Palmer or Jason
Campbell (my two other QBs) but I
wasn’t enamored with either of those options. This deep in a
draft where most fantasy franchises go three deep at QB,
Pennington was as good as it gets in spite of low expectations.

reliable, Stover is one of the few kickers to place in the Top

I'll call
this my homer pick. Bennett came out of Texas A&M and into
the draft as possibly the most complete TE available in the 2008
NFL draft. With the departure of coach Fazano to Miami, the door
opens immediately for Martellus to get work with the starting
line-up. I personally think his skill set is even greater than
Witten and Bennett can stretch the field more. He's my #3 TE so
it's not much risked on him, but I think he could generate a
great reward.

I was looking for
another lottery pick at running back. I think Pittman has a shot
to contribute for a year or two in
Denver
. Pitman is on the
downside of his career, but he catches the ball out of the back
field and really does what ever is asked of him. The Broncos
grew tired of Henry’s lack of commitment, which isn’t
something Pittman experiences anymore. He will at least provide
some veteran leadership to the team, but we don’t get points
for that. I am not sold on Selvin Young, so I think Pittman will
get a look.

The best defense
this year isn’t going to be the Chargers. Or the Vikings. Or
the Cowboys. Or the Patriots. It’s going to be whatever team
is playing against San Francisco. The 49ers allowed a
league-high 55 sacks last year, and now they’ve hired Mike
Martz to run their offense. Over the last five years, his
offenses have allowed more sacks, interceptions and fumbles than
any other team. In this league, I’m not allowed to select
“Whoever’s Playing San Francisco” as my defense, but by
selecting the Seahawks and Cardinals with my last two choices,
I’ll at least get four matchups against them — maybe three
more than every other team in this FanEx competition.

The first year I
played fantasy football, an old man (even at the time) named
Jan Stenerud was kicking for the Vikings. The guy put up
almost 100 FanEx points that season, and it was imprinted on
my brain that the Vikings kicker was a good guy to have.
Fuad Reveiz bounced out of Miami and became a fantasy stud -
well as much as a kicker can be - kicking in the Metrodome.
Scott Sisson? One big year in Minny, then out of the
league. Gary Anderson nailed down the job for a few
years and had something like 180 FanEx points one year (of
course, that's when Brian Billick was still a
"genius").
Aaron Elling,
Morten Andersen, Paul Edinger - all these guys put up over 100
points as the Vikings kicker. You just can't knock that
kind of history.

Woo
Hoo -- I get two Detroit "players" to root for in
pretty much meaningless positions. Anyone want to trade me
Roy Williams for the Lions Defense? Didn't think so.
But the upside is that the Lions acquired Leigh Bodden in the
off-season which should add 4-6 picks to their totals from a
year ago.

OK,
he isn't a warm-weather kicker to balance
Dawson
, but he has a different bye week and the Giants will be fine.
They will score enough for Tynes to be decent and on those few
weeks that he does better than
Dawson
, those points will come in handy.

Let's
see. They get to play the Dolphins and Bills twice, throw
in the 49'ers, Chiefs and Raiders for good luck and the Jets D
will have their share of good days. The Jets picked up DE
Vernon Gholston out of The Ohio St. University with the 6th pick
overall. He played defensive end at Ohio State, but was
recruited as a linebacker and will play OLB in the Jets 3-4
scheme. I see Gholston having the same impact Shawne Merriman
had with the Chargers during his rookie season when he had 10
sacks.
